Note that I'm not sure if all the above steps are actually necessary and if the order is strictly relevant (e.g. It might also work without installing SP1 or installing SP1 later) but this is what worked for me. 8/10 (322 votes) - Download Visual Studio 2010 Free. Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express Editor's Review
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express is a tool that lets you build native Windows or .NET Framework managed Windows applications. Part of the Windows Visual Studio 2010 Express suite of tools, it's a powerful programming language and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that can give you a lot of control when building applications for Windows.
This release of Visual C++ 2010 Express has some important new features. Its IDE is now based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). Visual C++ 2010 Express now offers support for .NET Framework 4, the new .NET framework. New language features have been added, including six new compiler features.
Usability has been improved, with an updated interface that's better-looking and easy to navigate. The text editor has been updated with a new font. Error detection has been overhauled -- you'll see a red underline if there's a mistake. The existing box selection functionality has been expanded; as well as being able to draw a box around a section of code to copy or delete it, you can now add a section of text to every line by typing it once, and copy-paste text between two boxes. The 'Navigate To' feature lets you jump to a particular symbol or string. There's a Highlighting References feature than highlights every instance of a particular symbol if you click on one instance.
Aimpoint express torrent. All the new features come at a cost, however. Visual C++ 2010 Express is rather more resource-hungry than previous versions. This means that it can be noticeably slower to run.
Pro's: Expanded functionality and an improved interface make this a powerful developer tool. Free.
Con's: Requires more memory and processor power than older versions.
Conclusion: Visual C++ 2010 Express is a valuable free tool for developing applications for Windows and the web.

Although VisualStudio 2010 is now old, I've always battled with the express edition to enable 64-bit compilation. By default, VS2010 Express only ships with a 32-bit compiler. In order to add the 64-bit compiler, WindowsSDK 7.1 is required. On more recent Windows versions this has become quite a task to get right, due to dependencies on the .NET framework for installers. In addition, the order of installation with service packs also makes a difference.
I've discovered the way to do this now, requiring two different tricks from the internet.
The instructions below are based on a blank Windows 8.1 installation, with all the recent updates (as of 6th June 2018). I imagine that a Windows 10 fresh install would also work. However, since these are unlikely to be what readers have, the general prerequisite to clean up the machine ready for installation is to remove all existing VS2010 redistributable installers (32-bit and 64-bit).
The downloads that are necessary are:
- VisualStudio 2010 Express RTM – en_visual_studio_2010_express_x86_dvd_510419.iso
- WindowsSDK 7.1 – GRMSDK_EN_DVD.iso
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Compiler Update for the Windows SDK 7.1 – VC-Compiler-KB2519277.exe
- VisualStudio 2010 Service Pack 1 – mu_visual_studio_2010_sp1_x86_dvd_651704.iso
The order to install is as listed above (as described here), and must be done in that order, or you'll eventually either not be able to install the 64-bit tools, or a previous installation will be removed.
Step 2, installing the Windows SDK initially presents an error:
The problem here is that Windows 8.1 has too new a version of the .NET Framework 4. To be precise, it is 4.7.02558.
The trick here is to fool the WindowsSDK installer into thinking that an older .NET Framework 4 is present. This requires modifying the registry in two places:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv4ClientVersion
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv4FullVersion
The accepted answer suggests using a version of 4.0.30319 to allow the installer to continue, and this works. However, there is a required trick to make these editable, or you see this:
The trick, described here, essentially requires you to change the owner of the keys from a Trusted Installer to your own user, remembering to do this recursively, and then grant full control.
Making the change to the .NET framework version in both keys, now allows the WindowsSDK installer to progress
Once complete, don't forget to change the versions back to the original.
Now the KB compiler update needs to be installed. This is the one trick that I hadn't seen before.
Once complete, the service pack can be installed
We're now in a position to try it out.
Using an (as yet unreleased) alpha build of BAM v1.2.0, the first attempt to build will try a 64-bit compiler, and will fail because the default WindowsSDK 7.0A does not offer it
However, a 32-bit build succeeds:
Note that vcvarsall.bat from VisualStudio is used to generate the build environment.
By adding the BAM package for WindowsSDK-7.1 into the test case allows a 64-bit build to succeed:
